The Unexpected Encounter

“… but the water that I shall give him shall become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life.”

– John 4:14

Like the Samaritan woman in the Gospel of John Chapter 4, we have resigned ourselves to the “wells” of this world, the substitute placebo that ultimately fails to satisfy our true heart hunger.  Never have we expected the answer to our unquenchable thirst is to be found in this stranger Jesus Christ.

When the Savior draws close, we are quick to erect barriers that hinder us from touching the true source of satisfaction.  The story in John chapter 4 is more than our story of failed fulfillment; it is God’s answer to all our barriers and excuses, while He holds out to us the promise of a living spring within.  Today, He would also meet us at our “well”, waiting all the while to hear us say, “Give me this water”.
